Broad Leaf Maple. 18"X6". Swivel Maple Base.
This piece was in a pile of random sawed up burl chunks that accompanied the purchase of my used Lathe. I propped the raw piece up on a bench in the shop for a year and a half to admire and think about finishing it. Most of the front of the torso was naturally there in the raw piece of wood. The challenge for me was to carve out enough to enhance the figure but not too much to take away the natural miracle. The back side was all carved. Spine, shoulder blades ect. There were crude chainsaw hacks in parts of the wood that I left in places and others that dictated the amount of carving possible in spots.
